Policy Briefings and Presentations


The ICLS regularly meets with decision makers from Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Health, Education and Agriculture to discuss its vision that reducing biological risks requires addressing the full spectrum of risks. The ICLS also hosts briefings for the diplomatic communities in New York and Washington, DC. ICLS staff regularly takes part in the meetings of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention as guests of the Chairman or as part of organized side meetings and lunches in cooperation with member states.

July 8, 2010, Washington DC. ICLS participated in the first of the three public meeting of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues to discuss benefits, risk and define appropriate ethical boundaries of synthetic biology. ICLS will submit its commentary to the Commission.
June 28-29, 2010, Cambridge, UK. The Computer Laboratory of the University of Canbridge hosted the third interdisciplinary workshop on the "Security and Human Behaviour". Terence Taylor presented on the subject of the "Natural Security - A Darwinian Approach to a Dangerous World".
June 22-24, 2010, Edinburgh, UK. The University of Edinburgh, "Operational Adaptation 2010". Terence Taylor spoke about "Adaptation and Networking Across Conflicted Borders".
June 21-23, 2010, Ljubljana, Slovenia. European Biosafety Association (EBSA). Prof. Khalid Temsamani presented posters on MOBSA and biological risk assessment. Prof. Temsamani also took part in the 20th meeting of the International Federation of the Biosafety Association, taking place alongside EBSA, to present on his recently formed Moroccan biosafety Asscoaition and apply for the membership.
June 9-10, 2010, Islamabad, Pakistan. ICLS sponsored a conference on “Responsible Conduct of Science”, which was hosted by the Organisation of Islamic Conference’s Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) in partnership with the Pakistan Academy of Science. May 18-19, 2010. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. ICLS helped organise and participated in the meeting of the BBIC Steering Committee and Working Groups.
May 10-12, 2010, Amman, Jordan. The 15th Jordan Science Week "Science and Technology: Drivers of Change?" was held under the Patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah Il ibn Al Hussein as a part of the National Campaign on Public Awareness for the Drivers of Change. As a part of the Special Panel on Development and Drivers of Change, headed by HRH Prince El- Hassan bin Talal, Chairman, the Higher Council for Science and Technology, Terence Taylor addressed the conference with the remarks on the dynamics and drivers of change for the biotechnology.
April 15-16, 2010, Geneva, Switzerland. Geneva Centre for Security Policy held a seminar on "Strategic technologies and our Global Future". Terence Taylor gave two presentations on the current state of the biotechnology and healthcare industries.
April 6-7, 2010, Washington DC. ICLS staff participated in a conference on antimicrobial resistance organised by the Microbial Threats Forum of the National Academies of Sciences.
March 31, 2010, Arlington, VA. ICLS staff met with with Darci Glass-Royal (founding director, chairman of the board, and executive director of the Foundation for Environment Security and Sustainability, FESS).
March 30, 2010, Washington, DC. ICLS participated in the conference held by the United States Institute of Peace on "Cross-Border Disease Surveillance: Promoting Cooperation or Sowing Tension?".
March 24-25, 2010, Turin, Italy. An ICLS representative participated in the workshop held by the United Nations Interregional Crime Research Institute on "Synthetic Biology and Nanobiotechnology Risk and Response Assessment.
March 22, 2010, Berlin, Germany. Terence Taylor met with Elke Hoff, Member of the Bundestag (Free Democratic Party), Member of the Defence Committee of the German Bundestag, Member of the Subcommittee on Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Substitute, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Spokeswoman on Security Policy for the FDP parliamentary group to discuss biosecurity issues in Pakistan.
March 3, 2010, Washington, DC. ICLS participated in the conference organised by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center "The 2009 H1N1 Experience: Policy Implications for Future Infectious Disease Emergencies".
February 22-25, 2010, Atlanta, Georgia and Galveston, Texas. Five members of the Regional Training Center Committee, including Tim Trevan visited Emory University, CDC and University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The visit was sponsored by ICLS.
February 16-18, 2010, Brussels, Belgium. East West Institute (EWI) Seventh Annual Worldwide Security Conference. Terence Taylor presented at the conference workshop on business resilience after bio-threats. Professor Khalid Temsamani presented on the Middle East regional perspective on biosafety and biosecurity.
February 15, 2010, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Second International Conference on Drug Discovery and Therapy. ICLS was one of the sponsors of the event. The meeting was co-chaired by a long-time partner of ICLS, Professor Atta-ur-Rahman, Coordinator General of COMSTECH, Pakistan.
February 13, 2010, Tétouan, Morocco. The first Moroccan Biosafety Association (MOBSA) conducted the First Training Course on Biological Risk Management. Tim Trevan presented at the meeting. ICLS sponsored the event.
February 10, 2010, Mainz, Germany. ICLS, in cooperation with Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty and the Rheinland-Pfalz Association for the Reserve Armed Forces held a biosecurity forum "The Invisible Enemy". Terence Taylor and ICLS Board Member Rainer Wessel both presented at the conference.
January 11, 2010, Washington, DC. The Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of State requested the American Association for the Advancement of Science's (AAAS) Center for Science, Technology and Security Policy (CSTSP) to host a meeting with gene synthesis provider organizations and relevant stakeholders from different sectors of the scientific community to discuss the draft Screening Framework Guidance for Synthetic Double-Stranded DNA Providers. Terence Taylor participated in a panel discussion on sequence screening. ICLS submitted its comments on the DHHS guidelines.
December 7-11, 2009, Geneva, Switzerland. Biological and Toxic Weapons Convention, Meeting of the State Parties. Khalid Temsamani presented on "Enhancing Biosafety and Biosecurity in the Middle East and North Africa.
December 3, 2009, Bethesda, MD. ICLS participated in the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB) meeting.
November 10, 2009, Moscow, Russia. IAG held its Fourth Annual meeting "International efforts in the area of biosafety and biosecurity in the light of recent developments” at the Moscow Medical Academy. Terence Taylor presented on the Biological Risk Assessment project. ICLS sponsored the participation of members from North America and Europe.
October 13, 2009, Miami, FL. 19th meeting of the International Federation of Biosafety Associations took place on the margins of the ABSA Annual Meeting. Tim Trevan participated and presented on the BBIC process.
October 6, 2009, Washington, DC. Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in collaboration with the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction, Proliferation and Terrorism hosted a conference on "Prevention of Biothreats: A Look Ahead". Terence Taylor participated in the panel discussion on the international treaties and agreements. Tim Trevan also participated.
October 1, 2009, New York, NY. Stanley Foundation session on "Resolution 1540: At a Crossroads". Tim Trevan presented on "Biological Risk Assessment Methodologies".
September 23, 2009, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brazilian Biosafety Association (AnBio) Biosafety Congress VI. Tim Trevan presented on "Biosafety and Biosecurity: Enhancing Capacities Globally".
